WHAT IS A STAGE 1 TUNE?

A Stage 1 tune, also known as an ECU tune, ECU remap or engine remap, is a software calibration of the vehicle’s factory Engine Control Unit.

Modern engines are controlled by sophisticated ECU software containing maps and parameters that determine how the engine operates.

Depending on the vehicle and ECU, Stage 1 tuning may optimise parameters relating to:

  • Boost pressure
  • Ignition timing
  • Fuel delivery
  • Air/fuel targets
  • Throttle response
  • Torque requests
  • Torque limiters
  • Engine load
  • RPM-related parameters
  • Turbocharger control

YOUR STAGE 1 TUNE IS 100% REVERSIBLE

Every Stage 1 tune performed by Melbourne Euro is 100% reversible.

We retain the required original ECU calibration data so that the vehicle can be returned to its original software configuration when required.

This means you are not permanently locked into your Stage 1 calibration.

If you later sell the vehicle, change its configuration or simply want the original calibration restored, Melbourne Euro can revert the ECU back to stock.

Before tuning, the condition of the vehicle matters.

PETROL & DIESEL STAGE 1 TUNING

Stage 1 tuning is available for many supported turbo-petrol and turbo-diesel engines.

Turbocharged engines often have significant calibration potential because the ECU manages boost pressure, torque, fuelling and numerous other engine parameters electronically.

The appropriate calibration depends on the exact vehicle.

For performance petrol vehicles where applicable, we commonly recommend using the appropriate premium-octane fuel specified for the tune.

Diesel tuning likewise needs to take into consideration the turbocharger, fuel system, transmission and emissions-control systems fitted to the vehicle.

STAGE 1 vs STAGE 2 vs STAGE 3 vs STAGE 4

We are frequently asked: “What’s the difference between Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 4 tuning?”
There is no universal industry standard defining every tuning stage. The terminology is generally used to describe progressively greater levels of software and hardware modification.

Here is a practical explanation.

STAGE 1 – ECU SOFTWARE TUNE

Stage 1 generally refers to ECU software optimisation on a vehicle using its standard major engine hardware.

It is typically the most straightforward and cost-effective performance upgrade.

STAGE 1 IN A NUTSHELL:

A performance air filter may be used where appropriate, but significant hardware modification is generally not required. This is the tuning stage Melbourne Euro primarily specialises in.

STAGE 2 – ECU TUNE + PERFORMANCE HARDWARE

Stage 2 generally builds upon Stage 1 by introducing airflow-related hardware modifications. Depending on the vehicle, this may involve:

  • Performance intake
  • High-flow air filter
  • Turbo-back or cat-back exhaust
  • Turbo outlet / dump-pipe modifications
  • Upgraded intercooler
  • Other supporting airflow or cooling modifications

The ECU calibration then needs to be matched appropriately to the installed hardware. Stage 2 can produce additional performance beyond Stage 1, but the additional power and hardware modifications can also increase stress on the engine, turbocharger, clutch and transmission. Melbourne Euro does not manufacture or sell Stage 2 performance components, although we may fit owner-supplied components where appropriate and subject to the suitability and legality of the modification. Vehicle modifications must comply with applicable road-use and emissions requirements.

STAGE 3 – MAJOR PERFORMANCE MODIFICATIONS

Stage 3 moves beyond a basic ECU tune and bolt-on modifications into substantially modified engine configurations. Depending on the vehicle and build, Stage 3 may involve:

  • Stage 1 and Stage 2 modifications
  • Upgraded turbocharger or supercharger
  • Larger intercooler
  • Upgraded intake system
  • Fuel-system upgrades
  • Spark plug upgrades
  • Cylinder-head or valve modifications
  • Supporting engine modifications
  • Clutch or transmission upgrades
  • Custom calibration

At this level, the vehicle is becoming a significantly modified performance build rather than simply a tuned standard vehicle. Melbourne Euro does not perform Stage 3 builds by choice.

STAGE 4 – EXTREME / TRACK ONLY BUILDS

The term Stage 4 has no fixed definition and varies significantly between tuners. It generally refers to highly modified vehicles using extensive engine, turbocharger, fuel-system and drivetrain modifications. Depending on the build, modifications may include:

  • Stage 1, 2 and 3 modifications
  • Larger or hybrid turbocharger / supercharger
  • Upgraded wastegate
  • Dump valve
  • Larger injectors
  • Fuel-system upgrades
  • Additional oil and transmission cooling
  • Engine internal modifications
  • Strengthened clutch or transmission
  • Extensive custom ECU calibration

These builds can become extremely expensive and are often designed primarily around motorsport or track use. Melbourne Euro does not perform Stage 4 builds by choice.

DON’T FORGET THE TRANSMISSION, BRAKES & CHASSIS

Increasing engine output is only one part of building a performance vehicle. As power levels increase, consideration may also need to be given to:

  • TRANSMISSION & CLUTCH
    Higher torque can exceed the capability of the factory clutch or transmission. More heavily modified vehicles may require clutch, DSG, automatic-transmission or driveline upgrades.
  • BRAKES
    Additional performance should be accompanied by appropriate stopping capability. Performance pads, rotors, brake lines or complete brake upgrades may be appropriate depending on the application.
  • SUSPENSION & HANDLING
    Coilovers, performance springs, sway bars, bushes, control arms and alignment components can improve vehicle control and handling.
  • COOLING
    Modified vehicles may require improved engine, intercooler, oil or transmission cooling depending on their use and performance level.
