Melbourne Euro provides a range of specialised ECU remapping and calibration options for supported vehicles intended for appropriate track, motorsport or off-road use.

These options go beyond a standard Stage 1 performance tune and are designed for vehicles where the ECU strategy needs to be modified to suit a specific motorsport setup, performance requirement or hardware configuration.

Availability depends on the vehicle, ECU, software version and intended use.

NOT EVERY ECU SUPPORTS EVERY OPTION

Modern European vehicles use many different engine control units, processors, software versions and calibration strategies.

A feature available on one ECU may not be available on another, even when the vehicles use similar engines.

Before performing any specialised ECU modification, Melbourne Euro identifies the:

This allows us to determine whether the requested function is technically supported and appropriate for the ECU.


POP & BANG / CRACKLE MAP

A Pop & Bang or Crackle Map modifies the engine calibration during overrun and deceleration to produce more pronounced exhaust sounds.

Depending on the engine and exhaust configuration, this can create:

  • Exhaust crackles
  • Pops during deceleration
  • More aggressive overrun sound
  • Additional exhaust character during downshifts

The exact result depends heavily on the engine, exhaust system, catalytic converter configuration and ECU strategy.

This type of calibration can increase thermal load within the exhaust system and is therefore intended only for suitable performance, motorsport or track applications.


ANTI-LAG TUNING

Anti-lag is a specialised turbocharger strategy designed to help maintain turbocharger speed when the driver comes off the throttle.

It is primarily associated with motorsport and competition vehicles.

Depending on the application, anti-lag strategies can involve changes to:

  • Ignition strategy
  • Throttle operation
  • Fuel delivery
  • Turbocharger control

Anti-lag can significantly increase heat and stress within the turbocharger, exhaust manifold and exhaust system, so it is not treated as a normal road-car performance modification.

Availability is limited to appropriate supported applications.


LAUNCH CONTROL

Launch Control is designed to help the vehicle achieve a more consistent launch from a standing start.

Depending on the vehicle, launch strategies may involve coordination between the:

  • Engine ECU
  • Transmission TCU
  • Traction system
  • Torque management system

On applicable vehicles, calibration changes may modify the way launch control operates or enable alternative launch behaviour for appropriate motorsport use.

Support depends heavily on the engine ECU, transmission and existing factory systems.


REV LIMITER MODIFICATION

The engine ECU contains an RPM limiter designed to prevent the engine exceeding predetermined operating limits.

On suitable motorsport applications, the rev limiter strategy may be modified.

Depending on the ECU, this can involve:

  • Adjusting the RPM limit
  • Changing limiter behaviour
  • Motorsport-specific limiter strategies

Increasing an engine’s RPM capability should never be considered independently of its valvetrain, turbocharger, lubrication, internal engine components and transmission.

The ECU may allow a higher limit even when the mechanical engine does not safely support it.


EXHAUST FLAP CONTROL

Many modern European performance vehicles use electronically controlled exhaust valves or exhaust flaps.

These valves can change exhaust flow and sound depending on:

  • Engine speed
  • Vehicle speed
  • Drive mode
  • Engine load
  • ECU strategy

For supported applications, ECU or control-system calibration may allow changes to the way the exhaust valves operate.

This can provide different exhaust-flap behaviour for appropriate track or motorsport configurations.


CYLINDER-ON-DEMAND MODIFICATION

Some engines use cylinder deactivation, also known by manufacturers under systems such as Cylinder on Demand.

Under selected operating conditions, the ECU can temporarily deactivate cylinders to reduce fuel consumption.

On supported competition or specialised applications, the cylinder-deactivation strategy may be modified or disabled through ECU calibration.

Availability depends on the exact engine-management system and software version.


START / STOP SYSTEM MODIFICATION

Many newer vehicles automatically switch the engine off while stationary using an automatic Start/Stop system.

On selected supported applications, the Start/Stop configuration can be modified through software.

Possible configurations depend entirely on the vehicle and control system.

This function is separate from engine-performance tuning and may require ECU, coding or vehicle-configuration changes depending on the platform.


VMAX / SPEED LIMITER CALIBRATION

Many performance vehicles have a factory maximum vehicle-speed limiter, commonly referred to as VMAX.

Depending on the vehicle and ECU, the programmed speed limit may be:

  • Changed to a different value
  • Increased
  • Removed for suitable closed-course applications

VMAX calibration is intended for vehicles used in an appropriate environment such as closed-course motorsport.

Tyres, brakes, suspension, aerodynamics and vehicle condition all become increasingly important as vehicle speed increases.


SWIRL & INTAKE FLAP CALIBRATION

Many engines use electronically controlled intake runner, swirl or manifold flap systems to manage airflow under different operating conditions.

Motorsport engines or modified intake systems may sometimes operate without the original flap configuration.

For supported competition applications, calibration may be available to accommodate modified intake hardware.

This does not repair a faulty intake system and should not be used to disguise an unresolved mechanical fault.


DTC CALIBRATION

A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is generated when the ECU detects a condition outside its expected operating parameters.

Competition vehicles can sometimes generate DTCs because their hardware configuration differs significantly from the original production vehicle.

For legitimate motorsport or specialised off-road applications, selected diagnostic strategies may be calibrated where technically appropriate.

This is not the same as simply deleting every fault code.

Melbourne Euro believes important diagnostic monitoring should remain active wherever possible so genuine engine faults can still be detected.


MAF SENSOR CALIBRATION

The Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) measures the quantity of air entering the engine.

Some heavily modified motorsport vehicles use intake configurations that differ considerably from the factory design.

Where the ECU architecture supports it, specialised calibration strategies may be possible for vehicles operating with a substantially modified airflow-measurement system.

This is application-specific and is not considered part of a normal Stage 1 tune.


LAMBDA / O² SENSOR CALIBRATION

Lambda or oxygen sensors provide the ECU with information about the exhaust gas mixture and are an important part of engine management.

On specialised competition vehicles with significantly modified exhaust systems, alternative calibration strategies may sometimes be required.

Availability depends on:

  • ECU type
  • Sensor configuration
  • Vehicle hardware
  • Intended motorsport application

Any modification affecting emissions-related hardware or monitoring must be considered in accordance with the intended use of the vehicle.


TORQUE MONITORING CALIBRATION

Modern ECUs use sophisticated torque modelling and monitoring strategies.

The ECU may calculate engine torque and compare requested torque against expected torque values.

This data can also be shared with:

  • Transmission control units
  • Stability-control systems
  • Traction-control systems
  • Other vehicle modules

On highly modified motorsport vehicles, the factory torque model may no longer accurately represent the engine’s modified output.

Where technically appropriate, torque-related calibration may be adjusted to suit the modified configuration.

This is significantly more specialised than simply increasing a torque limiter.


CAT HEATING CALIBRATION

Many modern petrol engines use a catalyst heating strategy after startup to rapidly increase catalytic-converter temperature.

Depending on the vehicle, this can involve changes to:

  • Ignition timing
  • Engine speed
  • Airflow
  • Fuel strategy

Selected ECU strategies relating to catalyst heating may be configurable on supported motorsport applications.

Because catalyst operation forms part of the vehicle’s emissions-control system, this type of calibration is not treated as a normal road-car performance modification.


TRACK USE DOESN’T MEAN IGNORING VEHICLE CONDITION

Specialised calibration can significantly change the way an engine operates.

Before increasing demands on an engine, turbocharger or transmission, the condition of the vehicle needs to be considered.

Depending on the application, attention may need to be given to:

  • Turbocharger condition
  • Fuel system
  • Ignition system
  • Cooling system
  • Oil temperature
  • Exhaust temperature
  • Transmission capacity
  • Clutch capacity
  • Brakes
  • Tyres
  • Suspension

We can diagnose mechanical and electronic issues rather than treating every problem as something that should be solved through ECU software.

OTHER ECU REMAPPING OPTIONS FAQ

Can you add a Pop & Bang or Crackle tune?

On selected supported ECUs and appropriate track or motorsport vehicles, yes. The available calibration and resulting sound depend on the engine and exhaust configuration.

Can you add Launch Control?

Launch-control calibration may be available on supported engine and transmission combinations. Some vehicles already have factory launch control that can potentially be calibrated differently.

Can you remove the speed limiter?

VMAX or maximum-speed calibration can be modified on selected supported ECUs for appropriate closed-course applications.

Do you offer Anti-Lag?

Anti-lag strategies may be available for appropriate supported motorsport applications. Anti-lag can impose significant thermal and mechanical stress and is not treated as a normal road-car tune.

Can you change the rev limiter?

On selected ECUs, RPM-limiter strategies may be configurable. Mechanical engine and transmission limitations must also be considered.

Can you change exhaust-flap operation?

Supported electronically controlled exhaust-flap systems may have calibration or configuration options available.

Are these included with a Stage 1 tune?

No. These are specialised additional calibration options and are separate from Melbourne Euro’s standard Stage 1 tuning service.

Does every vehicle support these options?

No. Availability depends on the exact ECU, software, engine and vehicle configuration.
